Dr Fareed Bashir was appointed as consultant forensic psychiatrist in 2005. He is based in Manchester. He is chair of the medical staff committee of Greater Manchester Mental Health Foundation NHS Trust. He sits on the regional committee for the approval of doctors as specialists in mental disorder under section 12 Mental Health Act 1983. He was lead consultant for the women’s forensic service. He was convener and chair of the forensic psychiatry consultant peer to peer educational forum at Prestwich Hospital, home to the largest medium secure service in England.
Dr Fareed Bashir has formerly served as medical governor to Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and as a committee member on the Royal College of Psychiatry human rights committee. He currently serves as an elected member on the Royal College of Psychiatry Forensic Faculty. He is a GMC approved trainer in adult and forensic psychiatry.
Dr Fareed Bashir invites parties to criminal proceedings to request psychiatric advice on matters arising at all stages from arrest to sentencing. He offers experience and expertise in a wide range of psychiatric issues pertinent to achieving justice in criminal proceedings. He has considerable experience in assessing defendants including those charged with murder. He has given evidence in crown court, appeal courts, and the high court.
